Famous Cols-Croix de Fer-Maurienne

The Croix de Fer Cross
The Iron Cross at the Croix de Fer at Sunset

Like many famous cols, the Croix de Fer has a less famous side. The classic climb is from the Oisans, usually starting in Le Bourg d’Oisans. The less well known side starts in the Maurienne valley in St Jean de Maurienne.

Famous Cols-Croix de Fer-Oisans

Two cyclists climbing the Croix de Fer
Cyclists climb the Croix de Fer in the spring with snow on the mountains.

Like most famous cols, the Croix de Fer has two sides. One of them is often labeled the “easy” one and the other the “hard” one. The “hard” one is usually considered to be the “best”.

The Croix de Fer is hard from both sides but in different ways.

About This Blog

This is the bike blog of Le Château d’Oz. It is a constantly updating resource of information about whats available in our area for cyclists.

There are few posts on technical aspects of cycling, others do that better. This is all about the resources available from bike shops which offer, rentals, repairs and accessories to cafés and restaurants where you can stop en route or get a good meal in the evening.

There are also short descriptions of the various climbs in the area. Once again, we don’t offer a metre by metre commentary, your Garmin does that better too. We offer an overview, a taster, a snapshot of the route.

All the routes are hard, nearly all of them climb more than 1000m from the bottom of the valley and then you have to get down and back home too.

You can help by commenting on the posts and by making suggestions.

I read all the comments and appreciate all the feeedback.
